Dr. Bolden Bush represented the University of Tennessee at the Faculty Women of Color in the Academy Conference (FWCA) in Arlington, VA. Thank you to the Office of the Provost and College of Arts & Sciences for supporting this unique educational and professional opportunity for indigenous and women of color in higher education to network, engage, and learn with colleagues from around the country. The 11th annual installment of FWCA featured sessions on leadership, career advancement, scholar activism, and the personal well-being of scholars.

'Twas the week before Spring Break and we're cultivating engagement! We were invited to connect with scholars and caregivers at Green Magnet Academy! We shared information on mental health and had a great time connecting with families! We were tasked with creating a Connect 4 board with paper plates, a plastic tablecloth, and lots of double-sided tape! What an event! We are beyond excited to share that Graduate Research Assistant, Zanned Rodrigues, received the inaugural Ted Jones Excellence in Professional Psychology Award by Knoxville Area Psychological Association (KAPA). The award provides up to $500 for clinical training opportunities for UT graduate students in clinical or counseling psychology who will pursue a career as a Health Service Psychologist. Zanned will use the award to obtain training in Culturally Modified Trauma-Focused Treatment (CM-TBT). Congrats, Zanned!
Graduate Research Assistant, McKenzie Martin, presented research at the 56th Annual Convention for the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). The theme for the convention was Emergency & Disaster Preparedness and Response: Using Cognitive and Behavioral Science to Make an Impact.
Members of the SUCCESS (Strengthening Underserved Communities by Cultivating Engagement and Supporting Scholars) Initiative attended the annual Soul Brunch for Shora Foundation, Inc. Dr. Bush served as a panelist and spoke about the lab's partnership with students and families at Shora Foundation. Dr. Bush was asked questions about the impact of trauma on children and families in East Knoxville.

Fall 2022
- Faye Domokos, McKenzie Martin, and Zanned Rodriguez kicked off the Fall 2022 Professional Development Series for our Undergraduate Research Assistants (URAs). The first discussion was entitled, Day in the Life of a Graduate Student.
- BALL@UT has launched the College ADHD, Learning, and Mindfulness (CALM) Study. The project is spearheaded by Faye Domokos.
- McKenzie Martin was selected to present research at the annual meeting for the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) in New York City, NY.

- We received a Mini Grant from UTK's Office of Diversity and Engagement for the Strengthening Underserved Communities by Cultivating Engagement and Supporting Scholars (SUCCESS) Speciality Clinic. The award is for our ongoing partnership with Shora Foundation, Inc. Currently, we are providing pro-bono clinical services to families enrolled in Shora's Academic Center in East Knoxville.
- Open House at Shora Foundation's after-school program was a success! We are thrilled about this partnership!
- Welcome to the team Zanned Rodriguez! Zanned joined our team after working at the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development as a Clinical Research Specialist and graduating from Florida State University (FSU). Her exceptional academic record demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and professional promise.
- We are delighted to announce our partnership with Shora Foundations, Inc. Shora has served East Knoxville for more than 15 years. Shora aims to provide a safe, secure, and sensitive environment for children. The Strengthening Underserved Communities by Cultivating Engagement and Supporting Scholars (SUCCESS) Speciality Clinic will provide pro-bono clinical services to families enrolled in Shora's Academic Center in East Knoxville. The Academic Center serves children attending five schools in Knox County: Chilhowee Intermediate School, Green Magnet, Sarah Moore Green Magnet Academy, Holston Middle School, Vine Middle School and Emerald Academy.

We are beyond excited to announce the official launch of the Strengthening Underserved Communities by Cultivating Engagement and Supporting Scholars (SUCCESS) Speciality Clinic. This community engagement initiative is consistent with UTK's commitment to build and sustain reciprocal community-partnerships. We are eager to partner with community-based groups serving underrepresented communities. This year, we will focus on the clinical services and awareness aspects of this initiative. Stay tuned!

McKenzie Martin was selected to join the Tennessee Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Scholars Program! The AHEC Scholars Program is an inter-professional training opportunity designed to develop a diverse, culturally sensitive health care workforce that is well equipped to offer quality care, particularly to rural and underserved populations. The program includes, in each of two years, 40 hours of team-based, inter-professional clinical exposure and 40 hours of didactic learning focused on six core topics: Patient-Centered Clinical Practice Transformation, Inter-professional Education, Cultural Competence, Social Determinants of Health, Behavioral Health Integration, and Current/Emerging Health Issues. After two years of formal involvement, Scholars are asked to remain connected to the program as your professional journeys continue. While each Scholar’s clinical experience will be unique, the didactic component of the program will provide opportunities for inter-professional collaboration, multi-disciplinary case discussion, and enlivening conversation on topics that are particularly relevant to population-based care in rural and underserved communities.

Fall 2020 - Summer 2021
What a year! Parks Mariotti landed a neuropsychology post-doc at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, Texas. Emily Mariotti defended her dissertation and she will complete her pre-doctoral internship at the Yale Child Study Center. McKenzie defended her master's thesis and was approved to form her dissertation committee. Faye Domokos joined the research team as a Graduate Research Assistant! Our team presented research at the Southeastern Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association. We can neither confirm nor deny that Dr. Bolden responded to text messages from graduate research assistants while delivering her son in Fall 2020. Dr. Bolden will be on maternity leave until August 2021.

Bittersweet .... the team hosted our "Oh, the places you'll go" Celebration for Parks Fillauer. We celebrated an awesome dissertation defense in the midst of COVID-19 and Parks landing an impressive Pre-Doctoral Internship in Clinical Psychology. We can neither confirm nor deny that Parks found a special dessert at his doorstep to kick off our virtual celebration. In the words of Winnie the Pooh, "How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."
Parks Fillauer is on a roll this academic year! Parks published three peer-reviewed articles, secured an impressive predoctoral clinical internship, and defended his ambitious dissertation! Two BALL@UT team members received special recognition at the Spring Celebration for the Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee. First, McKenzie Martin received an Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. She will be recognized at the Spring 2019 Commencement. Lastly, Dr. Bolden received the Department of Psychology's Faculty Graduate Education Award for contributions in graduate teaching, research, and mentoring. Emily Mariotti will present research on verbal memory and reading achievement at the 52nd annual convention for the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) in Washington, DC.
Dr. Bolden was selected as participated in Knoxville Knox County Community Action Committee (CAC) Community Leadership Class of 2019. The program is for current and emerging leaders who live, work or volunteer in low to moderate income communities and who have demonstrated a commitment to service and community engagement.
Parks Fillauer was elected to the board for APA Division 12 Section IX (Assessment Psychology). The section aims to promote "quality assessment in the practice and science of psychology." This is a wonderful accomplishment for Parks!
Parks received the 2nd place award in the Student Poster Competition for the Society for Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science (Division 3 of APA). His research project examined central executive functioning and frustration. The well-deserved award was presented at the annual meeting in San Francisco. Park received a beautiful plaque and was recognized at the reception.

Andrea Benavides accepted an offer from the Cognitive Neuroscience Master's Program at City University of New York (CUNY). Brock Partlow accepted an offer from the Clinical Psychology Psy.D. program at Xavier University. Holly Flatt will be moving back to Nashville, Tennessee to begin her graduate program at Lipscomb University.

Each year, faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee are recognized for their contributions to the college, the university, and the impact of their teaching and research at the annual faculty awards dinner. The Excellence in Teaching awards recognize faculty members’ excellence in teaching at the junior and senior level. Jennifer Bolden, Ph.D., assistant professor in the psychology department, received the junior-level award at this year’s banquet for her innovative teaching that extends beyond the classroom and impacts students in their future endeavors. Her nominator remarked on her highly-engaging and conversational lecturing style that engages students in discussions and activities. By integrating useful clinical examples in her lectures, Dr. Bolden highlights the real-world relevance of the course material. Many of her students also present work from her research course at professional meetings and end up going on for advanced degrees.

Undergraduate Research Assistants, Ashton and Christina, received the First Place Award for the Social Sciences from the College of Arts & Sciences at the Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement (EURECA). Their research project examined emotional intelligence, relationship satisfaction, and ADHD in emerging adults.
Jessica Shultz, our lab manager, will present findings from her honor's thesis project at the 20th Annual Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement (EURECA), the 7th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, and the 1st Annual Women in STEM Research Symposium. Jessica will attend the University of South Carolina School of Law in the Fall. Congrats x 3, Jessica!

Ball@UT will present research at the 28th Association for Psychological Science (APS) Annual Convention in Chicago, IL on May 26-29, 2016. The presentation will examine the unique contribution of ADHD symptoms to executive functioning deficits in college students.
Megan Carl is now a Division 39 Scholar! The Division 39 Scholars Program promotes intellectual curiosity and professional development relevant to psychoanalytic approaches to clinical work, theory and research. In addition to receiving a stipend to support attendance at the Division 39 spring meeting and subscriptions to a number of important publications, Megan will be matched with a program mentor who will provide guidance on the early stages of her career and training. Well done, Megan!

The College of Arts and Sciences celebrated outstanding faculty with awards in diversity leadership, advising, teaching, research, academic outreach, and service on December 1 at the annual Faculty Awards Ceremony held at the Holiday Inn-World’s Fair Site. Faculty receiving awards were joined at the event by their nominators and guests who shared in the celebration of the honorees’ accomplishments.
Jennifer Bolden is honored for her role as a dedicated advisor and mentor to a diverse population of psychology majors. She stands out as an advisor in the college’s largest department both because of the meaningful relationships she develops with her assigned advisees and the evident impact she has on the students she mentors in her lab. Since fall 2012, she has supervised over twenty-five undergraduate research assistants, with many of them presenting at the annual EURECA conference as well national meetings such as the Annual Convention for the Association of Psychological Science and the Annual International Conference on ADHD. Her commitment to the success of students from diverse backgrounds is demonstrated by her work with three undergraduates affiliated with federally funded TRIO programs. With professor Bolden as their advisor and mentor, these students successfully developed and presented research locally and nationally, and several are currently enrolled in graduate programs.

Undergraduate Research Assistants (URAs) Rachel Mottern and Ashleigh Mcginnis presented research at the 19th Annual Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement at the University of Tennessee on April 13-15, 2015. Their research project examined the relationship between self-reported attention problems and learning strategies in college students. You've worked hard, Rachel and Ashleigh .... Congratulations!
Former URA, Ashleigh Barker, was accepted into the Master of Public Administration Program at Western Kentucky University. Ashleigh received at least three offers this semester. We are so very proud of Ashleigh!
